Theodore Bikel’s Biography

The Bikel family fled to Palestine after the Nazi occupation of Austria following the Anschluss. In Palestine, Bikel started acting again as a teenager. He participated in the foundation of the Cameri Theater, which became one of the most important theaters in Israel, before moving to London where he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1945. In 1948, Michael Redgrave recommended Bikel to his friend Laurence Olivier as a substitute for the parties. In 1964, he played Zoltan Karpathy, the dialectic expert, in the film version of My Fair Lady. From his first appearance in the role of Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof in 1967, Bikel played the role much more often than any other actor (2,094 plays).

In the fifties, Thedore Bikel produced and sang in several albums of Jewish folk songs, as of Russian gypsy songs in 1958. He founded with others the Newport Folk Festival (Pete Seeger and George Wein) in 1961. In 1962, he heard Bob Dylan in the first performance of “Blowin ‘in the Wind”.Bikel became the first singer after Dylan to sing the song in public. In company with Herb Cohen, he opened the first folk music venue in Los Angeles, L’Unicorno. His popularity led the two to open a second, Cosmo Alley, who in addition to folk music introduced poets such as Maya Angelou and comedians like Lenny Bruce. Bikel became increasingly involved in civil rights struggles, and was delegated to the 1968 Democratic convention.

In addition to being a theater and cinema actor, Bikel has been a guest of several television programs since the 1960s, participating in the frontiers of reality, Wagon Train, Colombo, Charlie’s Angels, Little House on the Prairie, Mission: Impossible, Dynasty, Knight Rider, and Law & amp; Order.

Bikel was president of the Associated Actors and Artistes of America, and of the Actors’ Equity Association between the late 1970s and early 1980s. President Jimmy Carter appointed him at the National Council for the Arts in 1977 for a six-year term. On 28 January 2007, he was elected Chair of the Board of Directors of Meretz USA. Bikel’s autobiography, Theo, was published in 1995 by Harper Collins, and re-edited, in an updated version, by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2002.
