Peter Finch’s Biography

Born in London, he grew up in India, and later moved with his father to Australia, where he completed a long artistic training that led him to perform on the radio, in the theater and in the Australian cinema during the thirties and forties. During a performance of Molière’s imaginary patient, he was noticed by Laurence Olivier who was at the time overseas for a tour and invited Finch to try his career on the London scene.

Finch achieved a certain fame as a theatrical interpreter in London, reciting – among others – in the Othello of Shakespeare represented in 1952 alongside Orson Welles, in which he played the role of the evil Iago. In the first half of the fifties he had the chance to affirm himself definitively also on cinema screens, soon becoming one of the most versatile and sensitive interpreters of British cinema, at ease in the most diverse roles. Among his interpretations of the period, to remember the sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood and the comrades of the forest (1952), the elegant thief Flambeau in a strange detective, Father Brown (1954), next to Alec Guinness, the rude Australian soldier de My life begins in Malaysia (1955), the vagabond Jim Mcauley in Sul sentiero del sole (1957), a laconic and solitary character who wanders through the Australian countryside looking for work, in the company of his little son.

Since the beginning of the sixties, Finch’s career has been followed by increasingly mature and complex roles, which he was able to develop with instinctive and natural ability. He won the BAFTA award for the film The Green Carnation (1960), in which he played the tormented role of Oscar Wilde, the witty and sophisticated Victorian writer who fought between the infatuation with Lord Alfred Douglas and the sense of guilt towards his wife and sons. In Eri tu l’amore (1961) he played the role, inspired by the true story of Labor MP Wilfred Fienburgh, of a cunning and ruthless politician who plots to the top of his career. The role earned Finch a second British Academy award and the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival.

In 1967, Finch worked for the first time under the direction of John Schlesinger in the film Via dalla pazza crowd, based on the homonymous novel by Thomas Hardy, in the role of landowner Boldwood, alongside Julie Christie and Terence Stamp. The collaboration with the director was renewed in 1971 on Sunday, cursed Sunday, considered by many to be the best interpretation of the actor’s career, in the role of a homosexual Jewish doctor, anguished and introverted, forced to share with a divorced woman (Glenda Jackson) the passion for a young sculptor (Murray Head).

With Sidney Lumet’s Fifth Power (1976), Finch reached the peak of his career with the vigorous interpretation of Howard Beale, a TV host who comes to announce his intention to commit suicide, following the threat of dismissal received after the decline in the rate of approval of its program. The performance earned Finch the Oscar for Best Actor in 1977, a prize that was awarded posthumously, as the actor died suddenly from a heart attack on January 14 of the same year, shortly after finishing the shooting of the blockbuster I lions of the war (1977), in which he played the role of Yitzhak Rabin.
