Patsy’s Biography

Patsy Kensit , nickname of Patricia Frances Jude Kensit (Hounslow, March 4, 1968), is a British actress, singer and TV personality.

Born in Hounslow, in West London, by James Henry Kensit and Margaret Rose Doohan, originally from Ireland, Patsy Kensit has an older brother, Jamie. His mother (1947-1993) was a publicist and his father (1915-1987) a gangster affiliated to the notorious Kray twins in London. Nicknamed “Jimmy the Dip”, he was also close to the rival band, that of the Richardsons, on whose behalf he held a company for fraudulent purposes. He had spent a period in prison before his daughter was born; the latter believed that the father was an antiques dealer. Patsy’s paternal grandfather was a robber and a forger, and Reggie Kray was his brother’s godfather.

His first acting performance dates back to 1972 when he took part in a television commercial. The first film in which he took part in a secondary role was The Great Gatsby, 1974. In 1979 he played the role of Oscar as a child in the film Lady Oscar. In 1985 he became the voice of the Eighth Wonder group. The group entered the Top 40 charts three times with the songs Stay with Me, Cross My Heart and I’m Not Scared, the latter written and produced by the Pet Shop Boys. The band only released an album (Fearless), an EP (Brilliant Dreams) and a collection of hits, after which it broke up.

In 1986 he starred in the film-musical Absolute Beginners, by Julien Temple: the film, a bizarre homage to the 1960s of “Swinging London” and the social tensions that were aroused by the apparent cheerfulness, was a flop at the box office, despite the presence in the cast of David Bowie and an interesting soundtrack (among others, Gil Evans, Sade, Paul Weller, Miles Davis, the same Bowie). In 1987 he sang with Eros Ramazzotti in the song The Good Light of the Stars, inserted in the album In certain moments of the Roman singer.

In 1988 he plays alongside the protagonist Ben Gazzara, a non-marginal role in the film Don Bosco (written by Ennio De Concini), dedicated in the year of the centenary of his death, to the Piedmontese saint founder of the Salesians. After the successes with the Eighth Wonder he finally left the music in 1989 to devote himself completely to the cinema. In the same year, he plays a co-starring role in the film Lethal Weapon 2, alongside Mel Gibson.

In 1991, he interprets what many consider his best role in the Twenty-One film, which however has little success. In 1992 he obtained a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards as best actress in Bella and accessible. Also in 1992, he played in the British film Blame it on the Bellboy and in 1995 he was one of the protagonists of Angels and Insects along with Kristin Scott Thomas and Mark Rylance, who enjoyed great success. The same year he took part in a hearing for the part of Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager, a role that went instead to Kate Mulgrew. In 2000 she plays Anna in the film Best, a film that tells the story of Northern Ireland footballer George Best. His last major cinematic interpretation dates back to 2002, with the film The One and Only, which however does not reach the theatrical distribution.

After a period of relative silence, in 2004 Kensit returned to great public success by participating in popular British television series, the soap opera Emmerdale, and the comedies Bo Selecta and A Bear’s Tail (the latter in 2005). Also in 2004 his voice is sampled to record the single Subtravel by Alex Farolfi. Later he participated in various television shows and events that once again consecrated the popularity, in September 2006 he left the Emmerdale series, since the transfers in Yorkshire (where the soap opera is shot) and the time that passes away from the children have become too stressful. Later he was one of the protagonists of Holby City, an award-winning British television series with a medical setting.
