Michael Gough’s Biography

Michael Gough was born in Kuala Lumpur on November 23, 1916, son of Francis Berkeley Gough, a rubber planter and Frances Atkins. He studied at Rose Hill School, Tunbridge Wells, Durham School and eventually attended Wye Agricultural College, but when he attended a production starring Rex Harrison he decided to become an actor. He engages in acting at the company of the Old Vic in London, and makes his Broadway debut in 1937.

After a series of experiences in theater and television, he made his debut at the cinema in 1948 with Stirpe dannata, and in 1955 he took part in Laurence Olivier’s Richard III. Three years later he took part in the horror film Dracula the Vampire, followed by The Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), while in 1962 he was cast in The Phantom of the Opera.

On television, he also starred in two episodes of the Doctor Who series, The Celestial Toymaker (1966) and Arc of Infinity (1983), and participated in the Special Agent series and the miniseries The Citadel (1983).

In 1985 he played Lord Delamere in Sydney Pollack’s Oscar mia La mia Africa, and was then chosen by Tim Burton for the role of Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s faithful butler. Gough plays the role of Alfred for the first two films in the series directed by Burton, Batman (1989) and Batman – The Return (1992), and resumed the role for the later Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & amp; Robin (1997), directed by Joel Schumacher. Gough plays Alfred’s character for the last time in a 2001 TV commercial for the OnStar computer system, in which he informed Batman of the installation of the system in his batmobile.

The collaboration with Burton continues with the role of the notary Hardenbruck in the Mystery of Sleepy Hollow (1999), and as a voice actor in the essay Gutknecht in La sposa cadavere. Despite the announced withdrawal, in 2010 he gave voice to the Dodo in Alice in Wonderland, also directed by Burton.

He died on March 17, 2011 at his home in England, at the age of 94 after a brief illness. The body was cremated and the ashes scattered in the sea.
