Matthew William Sorum (Venice Beach, 19 November 1960) is an American drummer.
He has played in bands such as Guns N ‘Roses, The Cult and since 2002 he has been a member of the Velvet Revolvers. He played with Motörhead in place of Mikkey Dee, during his participation in the reality show I’m a Celebrity. In the nineties he was endorser Yamaha Drums, later Mapex, Dw Drums, and is endorser of Ludwig. He has always been endorser Zildjian, of which he is a great admirer.
Born in Venice Beach, United States, David and Joanne Sorum, both classical musicians, receive from their parents their musical knowledge from a young age. Always highly esteemed in his environment for the strong heavy metal vein that distinguishes him in every piece, Matt started playing at the Mission Viejo High School from a young age attending various drum courses. After high school he began to devote himself more to the study of drums, his main inspirers were Billy Cobham, Lenny White and Tony Williams, although, as he says, his favorite drummer was and will remain Roger Taylor. From the very beginning he collaborated with Tori Amos for his first album, “Y Kant Tori Read”, and with Jeff Paris, but tired of always being at the service of other musicians he decided to have his own group. After several auditions (including one for David Lee Roth and one for Steve Vai), the drummer entered the Hawk, a heavy metal band in Los Angeles with which he recorded a homonymous record in 1985. Unfortunately the band broke up in the same year, and the opportunity of his life came when he was contacted by The Cult with whom he will play until 1990 and from 2000 to 2001. It was in fact 1990 when Steven Adler was kicked out by Guns N ‘Roses for increasingly strong problems due to drug addiction. During the last concerts of the cult to L.A. Also present were Slash and Duff McKagan, respectively Guns’ lead guitarist and bassist, who were so impressed with Matt’s style and technique that they eventually decided to propose him as Steven’s replacement. That was how he completed the recording of Use Your Illusion I and II followed by the tour that lasted until 1993. The official gunner debut was at the Rock in Rio 2 festival, in front of 125,000 people, with the new keyboardist Dizzy Reed. After the experience with the Guns N ‘Roses after the cd The Spaghetti Incident ?, Matt collaborates in various solo projects, namely that of Gilby Clarke, that of Slash and that of Duff.
Later he will play again with Duff in the Neurotic Outsiders. In 1998 Matt was fired by Axl Rose. The drummer explains how he and the other members of the group did not get along with Gilby substitute, Paul Tobias, who continued to complain and criticize Slash in front of Axl. Matt got out of the way and told him to plant it with his attitude and in response was thrown out by Axl.In these years he also produces a highly appreciated instructional video and a drum method. The 2000 sees Matt on tour with the Cult, the dates are more and more and get a good contract with the major Atlantic Wea.In 2001 the Cult will decide to take a pause for reflection. In 2002, in memory of Randy Castillo, who died in the spring of the same year, Matt organizes a tribute concert in his honor on April 26th, in which Motley Crue, Montuose, Slash and Duff will participate. On October 31, 2003 he also released his solo album, Hollywood Zen, telling his life experience in Hollywood. Also in 2003 Matt will give life together with Dave Navarro to the band called Camp Freddy, a jam band that provides to his concerts special guests always different (Robbie Williams,Slash, Duff, Scott Weiland, Steven Tyler, etc.).At a charity concert he plays with Slash and Duff, the three have so much fun that they decide to form a band, in this project they also involve Dave Kushner and Scott Weiland, and they form today’s Velvet Revolver.Since August 2009 he has been the Motörhead drummer, replacing Mikkey Dee, who will take part in an English reality show. It is not obvious that Sorum’s participation is limited to the few months during which Dee will be involved in the show; in fact, Lemmy Kilmister leader of Motörhead said he was mortified by the behavior of Mikkey who took the commitment to participate in the reality “I’m a Celebrity” without telling anyone in the band. Sorum will leave Motörhead in late September 2009.He currently plays in several Los Angeles clubs in a pop band “Diamond Baby” and has been on tour in South America with the super band “Rock And Roll All Stars” composed by Gene Simmons, Duff McKagan, Gilby Clarke, Sebastian Bach, Billy Duffy, Ed Roland, Steve Stevens, Glenn Hughes and Mike Inez from April 19th in Paraguay to May 6th 2012 in Venezuela.
He currently plays the role of drummer in the concerts of the Hollywood Vampires supergroup.
