Langston Hughes’s Biography

The early years of Hughes represented a considerable reservoir of experiences that would have prepared to write about the human race, having as a child and as a boy lived in many places, coming into contact with different kinds of people. The teens were not very happy, but it was made possible to live experiences that no one else would have lived. After graduating in 1919, Hughes spent a year in Mexico with his father. This made him deeply unhappy and more than once, suffering from depression, meditated suicide.His father, believing that writing would not be enough to guarantee economic security, enrolled him at Columbia University, because he studied engineering. Langston did not last long, despite the good marks, and left the class, having never stopped writing poetry in the meantime.One of his favorite pastimes was to sit in some club where he played blues and jazz, and write poetry.

He graduated from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1929. His first novel, published in 1930 “Not Without Laughter” earned him the Harmon gold medal for literature. Hughes, who claimed to have been heavily influenced by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Carl Sandburg and Walt Whitman, is best known for his penetrating and vivid portraits of black life in America, from the twenties to the sixties. Hughes’ poems were often published in the PCUS newspaper and was involved in initiatives promoted by communist organizations, such as the struggle to free the Scottsboro Boys and support the Spanish Republic. Although close to some socialist organizations in the United States, such as John Reed Clubs and the League for the Rights of the Blacks, he was more a sympathizer than an active participant.

Langston Hughes died of complications of a prostate tumor on May 22, 1967.
