Kerwin Mathews’s Biography

After the divorce of parents, at the age of two, Kerwin Mathews followed his mother to Janesville, Wisconsin, where he completed his studies. After graduating in 1943, he was soon enrolled in the Army Air Corps during the last two years of the Second World War. After the conflict, he enrolled at Milton College and later at Beloit College, where he attended courses in music and drama and where he remained even after graduation, teaching diction and acting and working in local theatrical performances.

The breakthrough came in 1954, when Mathews moved to Los Angeles and joined the Pasadena Playhouse company. Noted by a Columbia Pictures agent, he signed a seven-year contract with the well-known production company and began his film career with some secondary roles in such films as 5 against the casino (1955) and The Jungle of the Seventh Road (1957). In the same period he made his first television appearances in the series The Ford Television Theater (1955) and Matinee Theater (1957).

In 1958 he was entrusted with the role of the sailor starring the “fantasy” film The 7th journey of Sinbad, full of spectacular special effects created by Ray Harryhausen, in which Mathews definitively established himself as the ideal interpreter of the hero young and attractive, involved in fairytale and romantic costume adventures. This film includes other films, including Gulliver’s Travels (1960), in which he played Jonathan Swift’s famous hero, and L’ammazzagiganti (1962), in which he played Jack, the poor farmer who Medieval England faces countless vicissitudes to subvert the evil men of the sinister sorcerer Pendragon, responsible for the kidnapping of the daughter of the Prince of Cornwall.

During the early sixties, Mathews had occasion to change the register, participating in dramatic films such as The Devil at 4 (1962), alongside Spencer Tracy and Frank Sinatra, where he played the role of the young priest Joseph Perreau. Among the roles interpreted instead for the small screen, to remember that of Johann Strauss son in two episodes of the Disneyland series (1963), entitled The Waltz King.

Mathews was also the protagonist of two espionage adventures of French production, OSS 117 secretissimo (1963), and OSS 117 threatens Bangkok (1964), both directed by André Hunebelle, in which he played the role of American secret agent of French origin Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath, in code OSS 117, created by the writer Jean Bruce. He remained linked to this film genre and still played The Viscount: theft to the World Bank (1967), in the role of Clint de la Roche (called “le vicomte”) and Un killer per sua maestà (1968), in the part of the CIA agent Mark Stone.

In the seventies, Mathews gradually phased out his appearances. He participated in a couple of episodes of the detective series Ironside (1972), and played the role of Dr. Duncan Stewart in an episode of the series General Hospital (1972). His definitive farewell to the scenes took place in 1977, after his participation in the horror Mai with the full moon and Malakay – Nightmare in Blood.

Retired from the entertainment world, in 1978 Mathews moved to San Francisco and opened an antique and vintage shop. Sentimentally linked to Tom Nicoll from 1961, the actor died on July 5, 2007, at the age of 81. The city of Janesville (Wisconsin), where he attended high school, gave him a road in the vicinity of the school, called “Kerwin Mathews Court”.
