John Williams’s Biography

Education and musical career

Williams was born in Floral Park, in the state of New York in 1932 and moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1948. At the age of 7 he began to study music and play the piano, trombone, trumpet and clarinet. It demonstrates an early talent, starting to compose for the school bands first and then for the American aviation, during the military service. At the age of 19 he was awarded for the first time for his original composition, a piano sonata. After studying composition in Hollywood with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (the latter was the teacher of composition and music theory also of other famous film soundtrack composers such as Henry Mancini, Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein) back to New York, where he enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music in piano, under the guidance of Rosina Lhevinne. It was she who encouraged him to continue composing. In this period, in the years 1956 and 1958, he began working as a jazz pianist in various New York clubs and later as arranger and director for some jazz record labels.

He began his career as a composer for several television programs in 1960, earning 2 Emmy Awards. Back in Los Angeles, where a promising career as a composer in the Hollywood scene awaits him. Initially he will find work as a pianist, collaborating on TV series and films like Peter Gunn, South Pacific, Some like it hot and The dark beyond the hedge and will meet Bernard Herrmann, with whom he will establish a great friendship. At the age of 24, Williams joined the arranging staff of 20th Century Fox (under the name of Johnny Williams), orchestrating scores for Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Franz Waxman and other influential artists of the era. Williams also collaborated with some pop stars such as Vic Damone, Mahalia Jackson and Doris Day.

Between the sixties and seventies Williams resumed his career as a composer and arranger for soundtracks, debuting as a composer of film music, since until then he had only composed for television. Some of the soundtracks that date back to this period are Heidi, Jane Eyre in Rochester Castle and Because they’re Young. The seventies and eighties will be the peak of the success of John Williams, winning the title of King of soundtracks for films catastrophic by critics for the film Earthquake, Crystal Hell and The Adventure of Poseidon for which he will be nominated 2 Golden Globe and 2 Academy Awards for the best soundtrack, attracting the attention of Steven Spielberg who will call him to compose the music of the film he was developing: Sugarland Express. From this moment Williams will begin a solid friendship with the director and a continuous collaboration. After the success of Lo Squalo, for which Williams won an Academy Award for the second time, Spielberg will introduce him to George Lucas. John Williams will bring to light the typical epic musical taste of the golden age of Hollywood, inherited by Franz Waxman, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and other composers of the time, with the soundtrack for which he won the third Oscar Award: Star Wars, directed by George Lucas. After this great victory, Williams will once again demonstrate his talent in the music of Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark. His fourth Oscar will be derived from the soundtrack of E.T. the extra-terrestrial in 1982.

In the nineties, Williams will still be very successful, with the music of Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List – The list of Schindler, Mom, I lost the plane and Mamma, I returned the plane: I am lost in New York, Seven Years in Tibet and Save Private Ryan. In 1999 he began the Star Wars prequel trilogy with Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, with which Williams will rekindle the creativity that has enlightened him in the seventies with the old trilogy and that will carry in the film Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone of Chris Columbus. For the Harry Potter saga he will only compose the music of the next two chapters, while in 2002 and 2005 he will be curating the music of the last two chapters of the prequel trilogy of Star Wars and War of the Worlds, Munich and the last chapter of the Indiana saga Jones: The kingdom of the crystal skull. In 2002, in honor of twenty years from the realization of E.T. the extra-terrestrial, Williams has established a record: during the screening of the remastered and restored film he conducted a live orchestra, playing the entire soundtrack in sync with the film. In the last years of 2010-2015 Williams composed the music for the War Horse, Lincoln and Story of a book thief, winning the Oscar nomination for each one. In December 2015 the Star Wars saga returns to the screens with the film Star Wars: The Awakening of the Force, a film that also marks Williams’ return to the soundtrack.

Father Johnny Williams was a popular jazz percussionist (one of the founding members of Raymond Scott Quintet) as well as a jazz trumpet player. He has two brothers, Jerry and Don, and a sister, Joan. He is married to photographer Samantha Winslow and has three children by his first wife, Barbara Ruick, who died in 1974: Joseph, Mark (both musicians) and Jennifer. Joseph Williams, besides being a solo singer, is a Toto singer.
