In Atlanta he met Big Boi of OutKast, and he took part in the album Idlewild in the tracks Call The Law and In Your Dreams. In 2007 he published his first solo work, the EP Metropolis. Initially it was conceived as a four-part concept album, or suite, that had to be distributed through its website and mp3 download sites. After the release of the first part, Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase) in mid-2007, these plans were modified following his signature with the Sean label “Diddy” Combs Bad Boy Records, which took place during year.

The label officially released the first suite in August 2009 re-titled Metropolis: The Suite Chase (Special Edition), in which two new tracks were added. On 18 May 2010 his first album The ArchAndroid was released, in which the second and third suites of the Metropolis project were absorbed. The ArchAndroid is a concept album in which Cindi Mayweather, the monáe android alter ego – also protagonist in Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase) – is outlined as a messianic figure in the Metropolis world populated by androids.

The Metropolis series project is inspired by a wide range of musical and film resources, including the works by Hitchcock, Debussy and Philip K. Dick, as well as the silent film Metropolis by Fritz Lang that la Monáe he quotes as “the godfather of science fiction movies”.

In addition to taking up its name, the album shares with the original Metropolis visual style (the album cover recalls the iconic poster of the 1927 film), social and political themes through images of future scenarios , breaking current issues of prejudice and class. In this context the protagonist is however introduced with a different effect. While the android Mary of Metropolis represents evil, a devastating force towards the strongly segregated working class of the city, the messianic muse Cindi imagined by the Monáe represents an android interpretation of that segregated minority that Monae herself describes as “… l Other, I feel, like all of us at a certain point, in the majority or in the minority, considered as the Other “.

In the development of the story behind the concept album, set in 2719, Cindi is an android who falls in love with a man who can not attend due to the restrictions imposed by society, becoming the champion of a movement for defeat prejudice, guiding people to rebellion and seeking freedom.

The first official single from The ArchAndroid is Tightrope, followed by Cold War. La Monáe received a Vanguard Award from the ASCAP and the Rhythm & amp; Soul Music Awards in 2010.
