Hugh Marlowe’s Biography
Marlowe began his theatrical career at the Pasadena Playhouse in California, then went on to act for the big screen in 1944, playing supporting roles in such films as Meet Me in Saint Louis (1944) by Vincente Minnelli, and Mrs Parkington ( 1944) by Tay Garnett.
Marlowe’s career was essentially a career as a confident actor, with roles in the most varied genres, from war films such as Sky of Fire (1949) by Henry King to the westerns as The Prisoner of the Mine ( 1954) by Henry Hathaway, to comedies such as Mr. Belvedere plays the bell (1951) by Henry Koster and The magnificent joke (1952) by Howard Hawks.
In the early fifties two of the most successful titles played by the actor: Eva contro Eva (1950) by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, where Marlowe played the theatrical playwright Lloyd Richards, and the sci-fi Ultimatum alla terra (1951), which over the years has become such a classic.
Although his film appearances have been thinning since the end of the fifties, Marlowe was noted in some prestigious drama films in the early sixties, such as Il figlio di Giuda (1960), L’uomo di Alcatraz ( 1962) and 7 days in May (1964), all three alongside Burt Lancaster.
Marlowe also worked as a television actor, appearing in several successful series such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Perry Mason, The Virginian, and the soap opera Destini, in which he played the patriarch Jim Matthews.
