Herbie Hancock’s Biography

He began studying classical piano at the age of 7, and immediately proved to be a child prodigy. In 1961 Donald Byrd invited him to join his group in New York, after which the Blue Note label offered him a contract.

His first album is Takin ‘Off, from 1962, which becomes a commercial success after Mongo Santamaría plays Watermelon Man as a cover. In May 1963, Miles Davis calls him for his album Seven Steps to Heaven.Hancock thus became part of the historic Davis quintet, where he will also meet Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Ron Carter. While staying in the quintet, Hancock continues to work on the Blue Note label, producing masterpieces such as Maiden Voyage, Cantaloupe Island, and Speak Like a Child. In the meantime he makes music for the film Blow-Up by Michelangelo Antonioni.

In 1968, when he left for his honeymoon in Brazil, he will fall seriously ill on his return and Miles Davis will be forced to replace him permanently with Chick Corea. After leaving the Davis group, he recorded for the Warner the album Fat Albert Rotunda, his first exquisitely funky album, also the soundtrack of the homonymous cartoon. In 1969 he formed a sextet with which he made several albums like The Prisoner. In this period he began to take an interest in electronic instruments. The albums for Warner Bros mark the definitive passage in the sphere of funky. The transition album is Fat Albert Rotunda followed by Crossings and Sextant (the sound vaguely resembles Bitches Brew by Miles Davis) and then move on to the real funk phase. The most significant album is Head Hunters in which the famous single Chameleon is present.

This period will continue until the eighties, when the continuous zigzagging of Hancock from one genre to another will lead him to follow two projects simultaneously: one close to the record and electronic music (from which will come out album like Future Shock, which contains the famous Rockit single, and Perfect Machine) and a hard-bubbly one: the meeting was formed with the same members of the first Hancock records: Tony Williams, Ron Carter and Freddie Hubbard. Also in these years he performed with numerous concerts in the power-jazz trio Hurricane with Billy Cobham and Ron Carter, receiving enormous success.During the 1984 international tour, he played Foday Musa Suso (gripper of the Gambia) with him, and in 1985 they released Village life, LP in which Hancock played the electronic synthesizer Yamaha DX-1 that allows to change the pitch of the single notes , allowing it to use the same non-tempered tuning of the Suso kora.

The nineties marked a new and fertile period for the Chicago pianist: The New Standards, Gershwin World, Future 2 Future and Directions in Music projects are the reference albums for the new adventures of Hancock.

In 2005 he published the album Possibilities, in which appear collaborations with various artists, including John Mayer and Christina Aguilera.

In 2007 he performed with The Quincy Jones the song The Good, The Bad and The Ugly contained in the album We All Love Ennio Morricone.

In February 2008 his River: The Joni Letters, dedicated to his friend songwriter Joni Mitchell, was awarded the Grammy Award for best album.
