Giada Colagrande’s Biography
He completed his studies in Switzerland, Italy and Australia, and in 1995 he moved to Rome, where he started making video art and documentaries on contemporary art. From 1997 to 2000 he participated in the VOLUME contemporary art project, for which he shoots videos on Jannis Kounellis, Alfredo Pirri, Bernhard Rüdiger, Nunzio, Raimund Kummer, Gianni Dessì, Maurizio Savini and Sol Lewitt.
He shoots three short films: “Carnaval” (1997), “Fetus – Quattro porta morto” (1999), and “n.3” (2000).
In 2001 he wrote, directed and performed his first feature film, Aprimi il cuore. Presented at the Venice Film Festival 2002, the film subsequently participates in numerous other international film festivals, including, in competition, the Tribeca Film Festival 2003 (New York), and Paris Cinéma 2003, where he receives the Prix de l ‘ Avenir. Giada was also nominated for the 2003 Nastri d’Argento in the best debut director category. Open my heart was distributed in Italy by Lucky Red and in the United States by Strand Releasing.
In 2005 he is the second feature film Before it Had a Name, written and performed together with Willem Dafoe. Presented at the Venice Film Festival 2005, at the San Sebastián festival and at other international festivals, it is distributed in the USA, in Italy and internationally by Millennium with the title Black Widow.
In 2010 he wrote and directed his third film “A Woman”, with Willem Dafoe, Jess Weixler and Stefania Rocca. It too is presented at the Venice Film Festival 2010 and at many other international film festivals.
In 2012 he made “The Woman Dress”, the third short film in the series “The Miu Miu Women’s Tales”, a PRADA project, and completes the film “Bob Wilson’s Life & Death Of Marina Abramović”, a documentary on a work by Robert Wilson, taken from the biography of Marina Abramović, with Willem Dafoe, Antony Hegarty and Abramović herself. Both films are presented at the Venice Film Festival of the same year. “Bob Wilson’s Life & Death Of Marina Abramović” is then screened at the MoMA in New York and at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
In 2013 also the film “The Abramović Method”, which continues its collaboration with the performance artist Marina Abramović, is presented at the Venice Film Festival and continues to be shown in various contemporary art museums around the world.
