Frank Gorshin’s Biography

The first years

Gorshin was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Frank Gorshin Sr, a railroad employee, and his wife Frances. At the age of 15 he undertook a part-time job as a film release at the Sheridan Square Theater, where he was able to study the acting of the big screen stars. Gorshin still attended high school when he managed to get the first paid job that also assured him the victory, in 1951, of a talent contest in Pittsburgh, which procured him the engagement for a week at Jackie Heller’s nightclub in New York , the Carousel. At the beginning of this new employment the young Gorshin was already hesitant because the parents had been alone since the night before, when a car had hit and killed the youngest son, just 15 years old, but was eventually persuaded to accept the commission and leave for the Big Apple.

After graduating from Peabody High School, Gorshin attended the Carnegie Tech School of Drama (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh. When he was not studying, he worked in nightclubs.

In 1953 Gorshin was drafted into the US Army and was stationed in Germany where he also served briefly in special services. Under arms, Gorshin met Maurice Bergman, who later introduced him to a Hollywood agent, Paul Kohner. The entire correspondence of Frank Gorshin’s military service will be destroyed in the fire at the National Personnel Records Center in 1973.

Career

When Gorshin left the army, he returned to public performances and from 1956 he began acting for several films, such as Young Delinquents (1956), Dragstrip Girl (1957) and Invasori from the other world (1957). However, his first leading role was in The Devils of the Pacific (1956). He appeared on television as well as being hosted twelve times at The Ed Sullivan Show (appearing for the first time with the Beatles and Davy Jones in 1964). On April 8, 1957, Gorshin married Christina Randazzo from whom he had a son , Mitchell.

In 1957, while driving his car back to Los Angeles from Pittsburgh, on a 39-hour journey, he had a terrible accident caused by a sleep. In the crash, he reported a fracture of the skull and spent four days in a coma; a Los Angeles newspaper prematurely announced his death without it actually happening. His trip was dictated by the need to shoot the film Mare caldo (1958), in a role of co-protagonist who then went to Don Rickles

Resumed from the accident, in 1960 Gorshin was engaged for the comedies Susanna agency ring and The beach of desire. He was nominated for an Emmy (for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series) for his role as the Enemmist in the Batman TV series, which consecrated him to the general public. In 1968 he acted in the comedy of Otto Preminger Skidoo, while the following year he had a memorable role in Star Trek in the episode This is the last battle (1969).

Also appeared in the musicals Jimmy (1970) and Guys and Dolls (1971). In 2002, he played actor and playwright George Burns on the Say Goodnight show, Gracie.

Gorshin made other television appearances in Grave Danger, episode of the CBS-TV series CSI – Crime scene directed by Quentin Tarantino and which came out two days after his death.

The last Gorshin show was held in Memphis (Tennessee) on the Say Goodnight, Gracie show. When the show ended, he flew to Los Angeles but at the same time the landing was reached by the ambulance that took him to the hospital where he died on May 17, 2005, at the age of 72, for a throat cancer aggravated by emphysema. pulmonary and pneumonia.
