Florence Leontine Mary Welch , known simply as Florence Welch , (London, August 28, 1986), is a British singer-songwriter.
Main component and founder of the Florence and the Machine music group, it stands out above all for its charismatic personality and vocal intensity.
Born and raised in London, she studied at Thomas’s London Day School before moving to Alleyn’s School, located in the south-east of the city, where she performed well, despite having been diagnosed with both dyslexia and dyspraxia. After leaving school, he studied at the Camberwell College of Arts, before retiring to focus on his music.
Florence Welch is a daughter of Evelyn Welch, a Renaissance history professor at Queen Mary, University of London, and Nick Welch, an advertising executive; he is also a nephew of the satirist Craig Brown and his uncle is the actor and former model John Stockwell. Dad Nick, according to Q Magazine, would contribute to the “rock and roll formation of the family” by musically influencing his daughter, who at a young age found inspiration in groups such as Green Day and Nirvana. The influences that the mother has exercised on the adolescent Florence are instead more related to the visual arts.
Florence and the Machine
During the period when her friend Isabella Summers started remixing songs from the band Ludes, Florence was a regular visitor to the recording studio, being at the time engaged with the group’s guitarist, Matt Alchin: Isabella is impressed by the woman’s singing skills. So one day, since Isabella wanted to start writing pop songs for some time, the two decided to form their own group. Florence and Isabella immediately developed a creative tune based on the brilliant lyrics of the first and on the strong sense of rhythm of the second, which thanks to his talent in the field of electronic music receives the nickname of “Machine”. This leads the two to perform under the name of Florence Robot / Isa Machine, which is later shortened to Florence and The Machine as too long.
The first publication, the album Lungs, took place in 2009: the project gives fame to the group internationally, becoming one of the best-selling albums in the UK and being awarded as a British album of the year within the BRIT Awards 2010.
In 2011, the group released the second album of unreleased Ceremonials, driven by the planetary hit singles Shake It Out and Spectrum (Say My Name), the latter at the top of the British rankings.

Precisely for this reason the new work of Florence and the Machine, titled How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful and published in 2015, has become more personal than the previous ones. It was promoted through the group’s presence at numerous music festivals, including the celebrated Glastonbury Festival.
In October 2012, he received his first solo vocal work. In fact, during this period, Scottish disc jockey Calvin Harris places the single Sweet Nothing on the market, sung by Welch. The song was placed at the top of the UK and 19 rankings and ranked second in Australia and New Zealand, and received a Grammy Award nomination in 2014.
In September 2016, the American singer Lady Gaga announced that she had made a song with Florence Welch. The song, entitled Hey Girl, is part of the Joanne studio album released on October 21st.
