Donald Seaton Cammell (Edinburgh, 17 January 1934 – Hollywood, 24 April 1996) was a British director.
It enjoys a “cult” reputation thanks to his debut film, Performance (a title translated into Italian as Sadism ), directed with Nicolas Roeg.
He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, son of the poet and writer Charles Richard Cammell. Senior Cammell wrote a biography of Aleister Crowley focusing primarily on the poetic work of the occultist, and Crowley, who lived for a time alongside the Cammells, met the young Donald. Donald was a child prodigy and portrait painter, and thanks to family knowledge he became a leading figure in the Swinging London scene of the 1960s, in particular the one that acquired notoriety as the “Chelsea Set”.
Cammell played a fundamental role in the realization of Performance . To write the screenplay, he drew on both his knowledge of the London underworld in the sixties and the friendship with pop musicians of the time. Working with Roeg, Cammell focused on working with actors and took on the heavy responsibility of the long-running film production in California, while producer Sanford “Sandy” Lieberson and co-director Roeg were already involved in other projects. In the early seventies he worked with the underground director Kenneth Anger, playing Osiris in the short film Lucifer Rising. After Performance Cammell could not produce other films until Generation Proteus , in 1977, impressive from the visual aspect, but in a minor tone. He also made an eccentric horror, The Eye of Terror , in 1987. Among the rare television and film directors, Cammell directed music videos for artists such as U2.
While his 1995 film The Devil’s Touch was cut by the producer, he committed suicide with a gunshot in Hollywood, California: according to his wife, the wound did not kill him immediately and he asked for a mirror to watch himself die (the subject is treated as controversial in Cammell’s biography).
In 2005 a novel was published, Fan-Tan , whose subject was born from an idea by Cammell together with the actor Marlon Brando.
In 2010 Keith Richards, a member of the Rolling Stones and companion of actress Anita Pallenberg at the time of Sadism , published Life , his own autobiography. Inside the text, the British musician addresses hard words to Cammell, calling him “a pimp, an introvert of orgies and piled up to three – and had a pimp […]”, and a “decadent parasite of the Cammell family [ …], a very attractive man, a sharp but deadly mind like vitriol. “
