David Suchet’s Biography
David Suchet is the son of gynecologist Jack Suchet and theater actress Joan Jarché, and brother of journalist and radio and television presenter John Suchet. On June 30, 1976 he married the actress Sheila Ferris, known in 1972 at the Belgrade Theater in Coventry where both were working, and is the father of two children, Robert, born in 1981 and officer of the Royal Marines, and Katherine, born in 1983 and physiotherapist. In 2002, at Buckingham Palace, he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, on the occasion of the celebrations for the fiftieth year of reign, and on 7 January 2009, at the Guildhall, he was awarded the title of “Freedom of the City of London”.
He is an extremely intelligent and versatile actor who successfully divides himself between cinema, radio, theater and television. Among his most appreciated theatrical performances, Oleanna (nomination for the “Laurence Olivier Award” and winner of the “Variety Club Award”), Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (winner of the “London Critic’s Circle Theater Award” and nomination for the “Laurence Olivier Award”), Amadeus (nomination for the “Laurence Olivier Award”, winner of the “Variety Club Award” and nomination for the “Tony Award”). Among his most popular films for television, The Way We Live Now (nomination for the “BAFTA”, winner of the “Broadcasting Press Guild Award” and the “Royal Television Society’s Award”).
It is notoriously known as the longest running Hercule Poirot on television. From 1989 to 2013 he played the role of the famous Belgian investigator, born from the fervid imagination of Agatha Christie, in the television series Poirot. His great success is due to the extraordinary ability with which he outlines the end psychology of the character, elegantly representing the nuances of character and the vivacity of genius, while not failing to emphasize with irony his tics and his foibles. But, in truth, Suchet’s first encounter with Poirot took place in 1985 in the film Thirteen at Dinner by Lou Antonio, where, curiously, he does not interpret the character with whom he is now identified (here interpreted by Peter Ustinov), but the chief inspector Japp.
He trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, of which he is now a board member.
He is vice president of the Inland Waterways Association (since 2003 and with his wife), of the Lichfield and Hatherton Restoration Trust (since July 2000) and the Waterways Trust (since 2001), and president of the River Thames Alliance (since November 2005 and at least until July 2007), associations that deal with the awareness of the British public opinion on the historical / naturalistic heritage constituted by navigable canals, and on their restructuring, and in this capacity has participated in numerous documentaries on the subject.
