Cary Elwes’s Biography

Elwes was born in Westminster, borough of London, October 26, 1962, the youngest of the three sons of Dominick Elwes, an English painter and journalist, son of the portrait artist Simon Elwes, and Tessa Georgina Kennedy, an interior English designer of Irish, Scottish, Hebrew-Croatian and Serbian origins. Raised with a Catholic education, the parents divorced when he was only 4 years old. His father later died in 1975. After completing his high school studies at the prestigious Harrow School in London, Cary studied acting at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.

His film debut is with Another Country – The Choice, a 1984 film directed by Polish-born English director Marek Kanievska, followed by The Fantastic Story, Days of Thunder, the Historical Glory, Dracula by Bram Stoker and the demented Hot Shots! and Robin Hood – A man in tights. Towards the end of the nineties he collects numerous participations, always in minor roles, in films such as Mowgli – Il libro della jungle, Twister, Liar liar, The collector.

In 2000 he worked in the film The Shadow of the Vampire and in 2004 he played in the horror-thriller Saw – The Enigmist. In 2004 he lent his voice to the protagonist of the video game The Bard’s Tale. In 2005 he played the role of the young Karol Wojtyła, in the television film dedicated to the life of Pope John Paul II. Also in 2005 he played in Edison City, while in 2006 he was directed by Garry Marshall in Women, rules … and a lot of trouble !. Since 2009 he has been playing the role of a renowned international art thief, Pierre Desperaux, in the television series Psych.
