In the early years of 2010, with the nickname of Hippie Annie , he founded the country supergroup of the Pistol Annies together with Miranda Lambert and Angaleena Presley. Parallel to the activity of the Pistol Annies (who have released two albums Hell on Heels of 2011 and Annie Up of 2013) Monroe has recorded and recorded a critically acclaimed solo album, Like a Rose (2013).
Ashley Monroe’s Biography
Born in Knoxville (Tennessee) on September 10, 1986, Monroe began to approach music from an early age, encouraged by her family (among other things related to the legendary Carter). In addition to being exposed, from his parents, to a wide variety of musical genres (but above all to country music and roots rock) at 7 he learned to play the piano, and began to participate in singing competitions. At the age of 11, he won his first competition at Pigeon Forge, playing the classic country of Patsy Montana I Want to Be at Cowboy’s Sweetheart, and shortly thereafter he began to perform regularly in a club of the same Pigeon Forge. At the age of 13 he lost his father, an event that radically changed his life and which Monroe later wrote in the song Like a Rose. It was at that moment, in fact, that Monroe began to write songs, using the guitar that the father himself had given her:
« After his death I began to try to bring out all my sadness by writing. It was my therapy, my outburst. I could not keep it all in “
From that moment Monroe began to act as a songwriter instead of a singer, and gradually made his way into the venues of Nashville, where he finally moved with his family. Despite his young age (due to which many record labels were reluctant to take it into consideration) Monroe eventually managed to get a contract with Columbia Records, obtained from the talent scout Clarence Spalding. For Columba Monroe he recorded his debut album Satisfied with producer Mark Wright; following the poor success of the two singles, however, the publication of the album was postponed.
Abandoned Columbia after the failure of Satisfied, Monroe self-produced an EP with Trent Dabbs (Ashley Monroe and Trent Dabbs) and worked as a backing vocalist and author with other artists, including Wanda Jackson, The Raconteurs, Jason Aldean, the Train and Miranda Lambert. While not publishing any personal work, Monroe became known in the establishment of country music during this time, obtaining statements of esteem from big names like Dolly Parton, Guy Clark, Vince Gill and Jack White. In 2009 his album Satisfied was proposed as a digital download on iTunes, but also in this case without arousing great interest from the public.
Among the collaborations undertaken by Monroe at the end of the 2000s, the most fruitful turned out to be the one with Miranda Lambert. Monroe was, among other things, co-author of two tracks from the album (platinum-certified album) Lambert’s Revolution, Me and Your Cigarettes and the single Heart Like Mine; the latter came in first place in the ranking of individual countries in the United States. The two became friends and began to plan a closer artistic collaboration; it was then Monroe who presented to Lambert a third singer, Angaleena Presley, giving rise to the group of the Pistol Annies. Each member of the trio chose a stage name: Monroe became “Hippie Annie”, while Lambert and Presley chose to be called “Lone Star Annie” and “Holler Annie” respectively. The debut album by the Pistol Annies group, Hell on Heels (2011), achieved great public success and excellent reviews from critics, despite an almost non-existent promotion on the part of the record label.
Based on the success of the Pistol Annies, and at the same time as their second album (Annie Up), Monroe also resumed his solo activity, publishing in 2013 Like a Rose for the Warner Bros. label. ‘album, produced by the “titan” of country music Vince Gill, was made including pieces written by Monroe in different periods of his life, and often in collaboration with other exceptional authors (such as Guy Clark, coauthor of the title track), and he was generally described by critics as the worthy crowning of the career of author and singer of the Monroe.
