Ann’s Biography

Daughter of the tenor John Defferin Rutherford and actress Lucille Mansfield (cousin of the actor Richard Mansfield), received the first successes since childhood as a prolific radio performer. He appeared for the first time on the big screen in 1935, when he obtained a part in the film The Girl in the Harbor (1935), by Joseph Santley. In just three years, between 1935 and 1938, he took part in over twenty films, achieving a certain notoriety.

In 1939 she was called to interpret Carole O’Hara, one of the sisters of Rossella in Gone with the Wind (1939), a masterpiece by Victor Fleming. The resounding success of the film allowed Rutherford’s career to take off. Another prominent character that the eighteen year old actress interpreted in 1940 was that of Lydia, the young reckless sister who runs away from home, turning the family environment upside down, in Pride and Prejudice, a film produced by MGM, one of the many film versions of the masterpiece by Jane Austen.

Between 1938 and 1943, he acted mainly in films focusing on the character of Andy Hardy, in which he is a fixed couple with Mickey Rooney, taking the role of the sweet Polly Benedict, Andy’s girlfriend.

After several years of discontinuous activities, Ann Rutheford retired from the cinema in 1953, following the marriage to the actor and producer William Dozier, to whom he will remain inextricably linked until his death in 1991.

Did you return to a sporadic big screen activity in the early seventies, appearing in Who killed Jenny? (1972), by James Goldstone and in Won Ton Ton the dog that saved Hollywood (1976), by Michael Winner, but without particular follow-up.

In 1997, the producers of Titanic (1997), of James Cameron, contacted her to offer her the part of the elderly Rose Calvert, but Rutherford refused. The role was masterfully supported by Gloria Stuart, who also received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In November 2005, Rutherford celebrated his eighty-five years with a lavish public ceremony in Beverly Hills, a city he had lived in for many years. At the ceremony there were neither Olivia de Havilland nor Evelyn Keyes (suffering from Alzheimer’s disease), the only surviving members of the cast of Gone with the Wind (besides Alicia Rhett).Evelyn Keyes would then die in 2008.

Ann Rutherford, who had a sister, Judith, who had a short career as an actress and singer with the name of Judith Arlen, was married twice: the first with David May, (married on the eve Christmas of 1942), from which he divorced in 1953 and from whom he had a daughter, the actress Gloria May, born in 1943, while the second with the aforementioned William Dozier. She is the stepmother of actress Debbie Dozier. A long and lasting friendship has tied Rutherford throughout her life to actresses Carla Laemmle and Anne Jeffreys.

Ann Rutherford, a long-suffering heart patient, disappeared at the age of ninety-four at her home in Beverly Hills, lovingly assisted by her family and her lifelong friend, actress Anne Jeffreys, who also had the task of communicating the sad news to journalists.
