Alida Valli’s Biography

Born in Pula from an Istrian mother Silvia Obrekar, pianist, and from a Trentino father, professor of philosophy and music critic with aristocratic ancestry, baron Gino Altenburger von Marckenstein und Frauenberg, belonging to a noble family of Tyrolean origins but of Italian patriotic sentiments. In 1936 he adopted the stage name “Valli” choosing, apparently, after consulting at random a telephone directory. She attended the courses of the Experimental Cinematography Center and made her debut on the big screen, starting from the very beginning starring roles and soon becoming the symbolic actress of Italian cinema of the fascist period, working in films like Thousand Liras a month (1938) and 9.00 am: chemistry lesson (1941).

Its versatility also imposes it in dramatic roles such as that of Manon in Manon Lescaut by Carmine Gallone (1940) and that of Luisa in Piccolo mondo antico by Mario Soldati (1941) that at the Venice Film Festival a special award given by Count Giuseppe Volpi as best Italian actress of the year. In the same year he lost his fiancé Carlo Cugnasca, aviator, who fell to Tobruk in Libya.

In 1942, however, his films We live and Goodbye Kira! under the pressure of Mussolini, the fascist censorship suffers.

Unlike many of his colleagues, in the autumn of 1943 the Valli, not to act in fascist propaganda films, refused to move to the film studios of the fascism of Salo (the “Cinevillaggio” of Venice) and remains in Rome where he hides with the help of his friends Leonor Fini and Luciana d’Avack. Also in 1943, Alida Valli brings to great success the song Ma l’amore no (by Galdieri – D’Anzi) taken from the film Tonight Nothing new by Mario Mattoli, which became the most successful Italian song and most transmitted by EIAR during the last two and the darkest years of war.

In 1944 he married the artist and composer Oscar De Mejo, cousin of Leonor Fini, from whom he will have two sons: Carlo (also actor) and Larry (who will follow his father’s footsteps becoming jazz musician) : after 8 years, however, the two divorced. In 1947 his interpretation of Eugenia Grandet in the homonymous film by Mario Soldati gave her a Nastro d’Argento as best actress.

In the same year he moved to Hollywood at the invitation of the producer Selznick who would like to make the Italian Ingrid Bergman. This period includes, among others, The Paradine Case by Alfred Hitchcock, in which he starred alongside Gregory Peck, The Miracle of the Bells by Irving Pichel, in which he acted in tandem with Frank Sinatra, and The Third Man (1949) by Carol Reed, played together with Orson Welles.

The actress did not support the rules imposed on her by the producer who, as is known, always wanted total control of her actors, and obtained the termination of the contract even at the cost of a considerable penalty. In 1951 he finally returned to Italy and a few years later gave one of his best performances in the masterpiece by Luchino Visconti, Senso (1954). In the same year his name is associated with the so-called Montesi case as a fiancee of Piero Piccioni, the main suspect of the time, then fully acquitted as also Maurizio d’Assia, son of Mafalda di Savoia (this scandal inspired Federico Fellini an episode de La dolce vita). He decided to move away from the scenes to go back to the camera only in 1957 directed by Michelangelo Antonioni in the film Il scido.

His fame is consolidated under the direction of directors such as Gillo Pontecorvo (The Great Blue Road of 1957), Franco Brusati (The Disorder of 1962), Pier Paolo Pasolini (Edipo King of 1967). It is also requested by foreign directors, many of them French. In the seventies he showed himself to be a very versatile actress, working with Valerio Zurlini in La prima notte di quiete (1972) alongside Alain Delon, Mario Bava in Lisa and the Devil (1972), Bernardo Bertolucci in The strategy of the spider (1970) and in the 20th century kolossal (1976).

With Giuseppe Bertolucci in 1977 he took part in the first film played by Roberto Benigni, Berlinguer I love you; Dario Argento entrusts her with two disturbing roles in Suspiria (1977) and Inferno (1980). Also in 1980 he starred in the television drama The legacy of the prioress of Anton Giulio Majano.

He received the Gamajun International Award in 1990, the David di Donatello for his career in 1991 (he had already won one in 1982 as best supporting actress for The Fall of the Rebel Angels by Marco Tullio Giordana) and Leo d’Oro for his career at the Venice Film Festival in 1997.

In 2004, Croatia decided to award her as a great Croatian artist, but she refused the award stating: “I was born Italian and I want to die Italian”. In 2008 she was named after a cinema – the Valli cinema – in her hometown of Pula.

Spend the last years of life in conditions of poverty, to the point that it is granted the annuity required by the Bacchelli law. After his death he was buried in the Verano cemetery in Rome. In 2010 and 2011 the Bif & amp; of Bari has awarded a prize named after Alida Valli for the young actress revelation (2009) and for the best supporting actress among the films of the festival.
