Aldo Ray’s Biography

Of Italian origins, his father was born in Vittorio Veneto, in the province of Treviso. From 1944 to 1946 Aldo Ray was part of a team of divers from the U.S. Navy, with whom he participated in the clash of Okinawa, home to one of the greatest battles of the Second World War. At the end of the conflict he followed his studies at the University of California at Berkeley.

In 1951 he was elected sheriff in the Californian town of Crockett and, at the same time, he made his film debut with a marginal role in David Miller’s Saturday’s Hero. Resigned from the institutional position, he moved permanently to Hollywood, playing two comedy films under the direction of George Cukor: Living Together (1952), next to Judy Holliday, and Lui and her, where he played a boxer played, next to Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.

During the course of the fifties, Ray enjoyed a certain notoriety on the screens, thanks to a series of roles of rough soldier in war films such as Before the Hurricane (1955) by Raoul Walsh, Men at War (1957) by Anthony Mann, and The nude and the dead (1958), still by Walsh, based on a famous novel by Norman Mailer. But it was equally effective in the role of Albert, the affable prisoner of We Are Not Angels (1955), a pleasant comedy starring alongside Humphrey Bogart and Peter Ustinov, with whom he formed the trio of romantic and amiable forced Christmas Eve evade a prison of the Island of the Devil and find hospitality in a family of Cayenne, helping her in business and free herself from greedy and despotic relatives, just arrived from Europe.

Actor of instinctive acting, of virile and robust constitution, with a particular shrill tone of voice, Ray specialized in the roles of raw, muscular but loveable characters. In over forty years of career he appeared in more than sixty films, although of increasingly modest quality with the passing of the years, with supporting roles that he found himself having to accept in order to cope with pressing financial problems.

He married three times: from his marriage with Shirley Green (1947-1953) he had a son. The second marriage to actress Jeff Donnell lasted from 1954 to 1956. From her third marriage (1960-1967) with producer and casting manager Johanna Bennett, Ray had three children, one of whom, Eric DaRe, also became a movie actor.

Struck by a throat tumor, Ray died in 1991 in the city of Martinez, California.
