Adolphe Menjou’s Biography

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from parents of French and Irish descent, he was educated according to the Catholic religion. He was enrolled at the Culver Military Academy and then graduated in engineering at Cornell University.

Always attracted to the vaudeville theater, he made his film debut in the 1914 film The Acid Test. After several appearances in minor or appearing roles, he played a major role in The Blue Envelope Mystery of 1916.

During World War I, he served as a captain in the ambulance service. On his return from the front, he became a true silent film star with films like Lo sceicco next to Valentino, and I tre muschettieri (The Three Musketeers). With the part played in the film The 1923 woman in Paris built her character as a very elegant man of the world.

His career came to an end with the advent of the sound, but in 1930 he played in the film Morocco alongside Marlene Dietrich and later received an Academy Award nomination for his participation in the film The Front Page of 1931.

In 1947 Menjou collaborated with the House Committee on Un-American Activities in search of actors sympathizing with Communism, and was a prominent member of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideas, a conservative group that he opposed the influences of the communist ideology on Hollywood cinema; among the other members of the group were actress Barbara Stanwyck and her husband, actor Robert Taylor.

Also in 1947 he published his autobiography entitled It Took Nine Tailors and ended his career with the character of a World War I officer in the film Horizons of Glory (1957) and of the mocking Mr. Pendleton in The secret of Pollyanna (1960).

He died on October 29, 1963 of chronic hepatitis in Beverly Hills, California.
